Understanding Versus Knowledge

May 24, 2017

By John Veltheim

The following article is a more in-depth description of the Protocol Update course I am teaching for free on the first day following this year's IBA Conference. There have been some changes since my original conception.

-------------------------------------------------

It always has been my vision that BodyTalk would evolve and shift not only as new scientific breakthroughs came to light but also as the intuitive understanding of the system deepened. My own research has contributed significantly to the ongoing development of BodyTalk, however the more essential component in BodyTalk's continued advancement and success has been the deepening of my own understanding and that of our many practitioners.

We can equate knowledge with learned information--knowing the latest scientific research or an extensive knowledge of human anatomy or the chakras. You might be able to memorize and regurgitate information extremely well, but if the learned information has not been integrated through intuitive self-exploration or inner inquiry, the understanding will be superficial at best.

Understanding is deeper and partially intuitive. It involves fathoming the nature of what you are doing and how it fits into the big picture. This deeper understanding is what helps us get beyond the Cartesian model. Over the years, much of what I've shared in courses has been the result of my own deepening understanding of BodyTalk. That said, if you have not taken my understandings and made them your own, it simply becomes knowledge and information again.

It has become quite clear to me that the there are two main reasons why practitioners don't always achieve regular effective results with BodyTalk. The first is the lack of healthy functioning of the Three Brain Complex in clients and practitioners. I address this topic thoroughly in the Soul's Journey course. The second reason practitioners don't get consistently good results is that they have good knowledge but lack understanding. This often correlates back to an imbalance in the Three Brain Complex where the head brain and its capacity for absorbing facts and information is exalted while the other two brains which are more involved in integration, wisdom and understanding are undervalued.

Dynamic Systems Theory is taught in BodyTalk Fundamentals to encourage students to move away from applying knowledge in a Cartesian model and towards an understanding and intuiting of how the smallest change influences all systems and relationships. The Protocol chart and its techniques are first taught in a linear Cartesian way for ease of comprehension, however it was my intention that once they became learned structures, practitioners would no longer use them as a fixed framework. I haven't used the Protocol chart to guide my sessions for over 15 years, and I rarely apply the concept of linking-this-to-that, which is itself a very Cartesian approach. As we truly deepen our understanding of BodyTalk, Dynamic Systems Theory becomes the understanding and experience rather than a nice theoretical idea.

In the one-day Protocol Update course I am teaching, we will be upgrading and deepening our understanding of what we are actually doing with BodyTalk protocol and techniques. The first part of the day, we will focus on examining the nature of knowledge versus understanding. We will touch upon certain concepts like the nonexistence of time and space and how understanding versus knowledge of such a concept can profoundly alter the perception of your BodyTalk sessions, not to mention your life.

The second part of the Protocol Update course will focus on deepening the understanding of the key items and techniques on the Protocol chart. The goal is not simply to acquire enhanced information, but rather to unlearn some of the rigid structures you may have imposed around certain techniques and broaden the vision for the potentiality of all BodyTalk techniques.

This is an essential course for everyone, especially as it follows the presentations of our Keynote Speakers from Conference. Lonny Jarrett, for example, will expand our knowledge of the Three Heater, but he will also help us understand why knowing about the Three Heater is important to all aspects of functioning and well-being. As I elaborate on the difference between knowledge versus understanding in this course, I intend to take Lonny's understandings and the many other insights from our Presenters even deeper as we explore their far reach and implications.

My original intention in this course was to provide a handout of the complete protocol of BodyTalk, incorporating the information and techniques for all the courses taught to date. Obviously, I had forgotten just how much material there is in the 20 courses being taught. Therefore, at this stage, a complete updated protocol will not be presented. I will instead focus on clarifying in greater depth and understanding the key techniques in many of these courses.

If you are not going to make it to the Conference this year either in-person or live stream, please make sure you register for this Free one-day course. Even if you can't watch it while it's being streamed, you will have 90 days to view it. It is a course I expect every practitioner to take. As you will learn, developing understanding is absolutely essential to being an effective BodyTalk practitioner.
