Retro Course from John

John Teaches Traditional 5 Element Acupuncture, May 14-15

I am really looking forward to going back to my roots to teach a course that has always been one of my favorites. I've been teaching Traditional 5 Element Acupuncture for about 40 years and have found that students find it very informative and helpful as a tool to incorporate into their healthcare practices regardless of their background.

There are some very clear distinctions between Traditional 5 Element Acupuncture and Chinese Medicine. Chinese Medicine is far more common in the United States and relies heavily on herbal remedies and medicinal concoctions with acupuncture often, though not always, included to facilitate the healing process.

Traditional 5 Element Acupuncture, on the other hand, does not use herbs and includes a more Taoist philosophy as its foundation. The Taoists brought great emphasis to the concept of living in harmony with nature, with the flow of the seasons, the rhythms of the day, the movement of the planets, and so on. They came up with a comprehensive healing system that incorporated the concepts of yin and yang and the 5 elements--which are essential to the flow of all life--and related that to the body.

The Taoists also found that certain Command Points on the body could be manipulated to affect its energy and used acupuncture as the primary method to affect these points. In addition, they had a specialized form of pulse reading that was significantly simpler than Chinese Medicine pulse reading. I will be teaching this system of pulse reading as part of the course, as well as some straightforward but incredibly useful methods of tongue diagnosis.

There is no conflict between the 5 Element and Chinese systems, and although I was never particularly interested in herbal medicine, both systems can complement one another very nicely.

This course will bring a broader context and a deeper understanding to many of the dynamics of BodyTalk, some of which are particularly emphasized in BodyTalk: BioDynamics (Mod 4(7)) and BodyTalk: Macrocosmic BodyMind (Mod 6). The course will also look at the practical applications of Traditional 5 Element Acupuncture within BodyTalk sessions. I will be teaching how to work with the Command Points in a treatment, for example, linking or CDRRRII-ing them, without any need for acupuncture. After this course, you will also be able to measure changes in the pulse as well as other methods to assess the shifts that occur from a session.

As an overview, upon taking this course, you will learn:

  • Traditional 5 Element history and theory
  • A basic approach to taking pulses
  • Command Points
  • Tongue Diagnosis
  • Ways to quickly assess affected body parts
  • Ways to assess conditions of excess or deficiency
  • BodyTalk treatment approaches based on the above knowledge

This course truly puts together many of the core principles that underlie BodyTalk and its creation. I hope you can join me.
