Trauma and Intuition: A Powerful Link

By Shelley Poovey

Any trauma, whether a single event or over time, is simply a stressor from which someone has had difficulty recovering.

Initially, the body can be very clever in how it tries to manage the trauma, as it attempts to keep life functioning as normally as possible. The body-mind will even turn to using its natural intuitive faculties to help itself survive. Unfortunately, over time, the accumulated compensations the body makes to mitigate these stressors often lead to a deterioration in health. Eventually, the body-mind may become stuck in "fight or flight" mode. When this occurs, it has a major impact on the hypothalamus, which is vital in regulating homeostasis.

In a state of distress, the hypothalamus sends a constant flood of cortisol and other stress hormones throughout the body, and now the effects of the trauma are entirely systemic. This can result in myriad consequences. First, it can decrease the diversity of the gut microbiome, contributing to the proliferation of "bad" bacteria in the gut. It can lead to weakened immunity and increased susceptibility to chronic diseases. Emotionally, the impact may be increased anxiety, depression, and less resiliency to stress.

Quite interestingly, the intuition can also become heightened as an adaptation to help the body survive and recover. In this intuitively enhanced state, the body may sense danger in advance or experience unique signs and synchronicities. While intuitive activation is a temporary coping mechanism that can help a traumatized individual survive, over time, it is likely to interfere with internal communication and a healthy, balanced state of intuition that supports homeostasis.

Although not always readily apparent, even those who have lived a relatively steady life have probably experienced trauma. Those who enter the healing professions often have a naturally heightened intuition and sensitivity that can make it even easier to experience trauma from events that might not impact less sensitive individuals as strongly. While we can all recognize major traumas that would harm any human, many people can be traumatized from seemingly minor events that still create a highly charged wound during a susceptible time.

What does this mean? It means we all have experienced trauma.

Is this always going to be to our detriment? No! It does not have to be.

In our Trauma and Intuition group session series with Advanced Practitioner and Instructor Trainee Shelley Poovey, she highlights the positive aspects of trauma as a catalyst for self-discovery and inner transformation. Shelley will address the relationship between Trauma and Intuition, supporting our intuition to work for us in positive and expansive ways, loosening its reflex to work for our survival. Using the wisdom of BodyTalk, she will assist in unwinding tension patterns going back to early childhood, fetal life and the family system. This will help to restore harmonious communication throughout the immune system, energy pathways, microbiome, and other systems impacted by trauma.

Depending on when you are reading this article, you can register for the event on our registration pages here, or find the session recordings on PaRama Campus.

Group Session series offer an opportunity for anyone to partake in a remote pre-recorded BodyTalk session with top Instructors in the BodyTalk System. Instructors tune into the collective energy of all those who will listen, providing a session that can offer powerful benefits to anyone who may view the session in the future. Countless testimonials have demonstrated that viewing these sessions at any time and tapping them out can be just as effective as receiving sessions in real time in person. In fact, group sessions are often more powerful because they are amplified by the shared observations and experiences of a large group. Additionally, remote group sessions will increase your understanding of important BodyTalk concepts that you can bring into your sessions with clients and provide an opportunity for shifts in your own health, consciousness, and perception.
