The Debilitating Nature of Fatigue

"Let your body take care of you."

– Deepak Chopra

The first topic in our Vitality and Clarity Group Session Series (renamed from Get Comfortable and Clear Series) kicks off next week, and there is a poignant tale to it. This is because John's own personal struggle and eventual triumph over chronic fatigue were the catalysts for the birth of the BodyTalk System.

Other terms used to denote chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) are myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and fibromyalgia (FM). A more recent term is systemic exertion intolerance disease (SEID). Chronic fatigue syndrome is as debilitating as this name implies. The sufferer cannot tolerate and is overwhelmed by exertion of any kind--physical, cognitive and emotional--and fatigue is persistent. Another daunting aspect of living with CFS is that there is no medical explanation for its cause. This means that the sufferer of CFS is dealing with an invisible and yet, to them, profoundly tangible disorder and has no answers as to what is causing them to feel this way.

We tend to think, "If you rest, you'll get your energy back," but that simply is not the case with chronic fatigue. Not having a clear explanation to give friends, family and co-workers, other than "I'm exhausted," is an added psychological challenge, the effects of which cannot be overestimated. Whether you are a practitioner, layperson, or a sufferer of CFS, we would all do well to inform ourselves about this increasingly prevalent disorder

In general, John will begin each of the Vitality and Clarity group sessions by highlighting various factors involved in the disorder in question (see additional session topics below), followed by a discussion on possible BodyTalk treatment approaches. He will also suggest alternative non-BodyTalk approaches if something other than BodyTalk is warranted. The next part of the course is what many people say is their favorite: John has someone come up to his treatment table who acts as a surrogate for a group treatment for all those viewing the session. The majority of students watch these classes primarily to receive the group treatments because they experience them so powerfully. For those of you who watch the class video after the fact, rest assured the group session will be just as effective for you.
