The Spell is Born in MindScape

By Cecilia Shaw

I watched its gestational phases in my Mindscape Workshop. It began as a small unidentified object with brewing lava in its center. It grew to a gigantic tree in the middle of my small library. The "it" was my fantasy fiction book The Spell. It was conceived and came to life within the structure of my mental workshop--a workshop we build for ourselves in MindScape class.

I asked my female guide Gwendolyn, "Why so many leaves?" She responded, "Every leaf is a page in your book." "Holy sh ..., that's a lot of leaves, Gwendolyn!" During the writing process, deep within the recesses of my MindScape workshop, Agatha Christie refused to leave my poolside. She suggested I should worry more about putting out a good book than hosting a good book-signing event." "But Agatha, I want to wear a cool outfit that day... ugh!" Edgar Cayce, the clairvoyant who was often called "the sleeping prophet," turned my workshop into a tree while the book went out for print. There was never a dull day in my MindScape book journey.

The process of writing The Spell was a labor of unimaginable love--the kind of love that pushes you down a rabbit hole so fast that your Alice-in-Wonderland-parachute-dress billows off and away from your body leaving you to navigate bare. Imagine FreeFalling while in MindScape
.

Cecilia holds one of the first copies of her new book.

I often get asked why I chose such a simple title. My answer is, "It made me." The essence of the spell in the story was given so much importance, it became an entity ruling over rulers, spilling into real life, and demanding its name for the title. The Spell set itself in sixteenth-century England in the fictional forests of Fleurham. It tells the story of a royal family whose world is turned upside down when an archer shoots an arrow at the child Princess Isabella. King Maurice becomes lost in an enchanted forest in his quest to find the mysterious archer. There, he is bewitched by a mysterious old lady and her granddaughter who use potions to keep him captive in their cottage while pretending to offer hospitality. The king's attempts to escape continue to fail. Meanwhile Queen Lilac, convinced that the arrow is cursed, becomes obsessed with reversing the spell that plagues the young princess with strange ills and has caused the king's disappearance. The queen will go to any measure to reverse the spell. She consults seers and masters of the supernatural to save her daughter and find the missing king. Throughout the story, Princess Isabella faces the challenge of succumbing to the spell or daring to defeat it.

Since the year 2000, I have started many novels yet to be finished. I know wholeheartedly that The Spell came to fruition because it was developed in my Mindscape workshop. The power of MindScape is real! Like Bruce Lee once said, "The intangible represents the real power of the universe. It is the seed of the tangible." This book sent me so many subtle messages in my MindScape workshop--messages that I hope you may hear, feel and see too.

I would like to give a huge thanks to the amazingly creative Karen Taylor of Dr. Janet Galipo's office for designing the book cover, map and website, producing the book trailer, and traveling this journey with me.
